Last month, I was asked ‘why’ did I attend this one meeting for women business owners? In her mind she probably wondered that about me every time I stood up with my 30-second introduction about Federal contracting. Many of the attendees are in direct sales and are solo-entrepreneurs. My business prospect does not attend the meeting. So, how does the meeting make a difference to me; my business?

So, if I hear that question correctly – my response could be another question – I can’t attend your meeting because my business does not prosper there? I can’t attend because it’s not the best decision for two hours out of my month?

The answer is very simple. I enjoy being with these wonderful women, who are so excited about their businesses. Do you attend a similar network meeting? Don’t you feel it too? I choose to attend the meeting. I choose to surround myself with positive women… I choose to rejuvenate my inner spirit. And that in turn rejuvenates my approach to my business. When the meeting has ended, how do you feel? If you feel that you do not receive anything from the meeting because you didn’t make a sale, then why do you attend?

Dollar Signs in Your Eyes?

If you actually do not receive anything from the meeting, then perhaps you attend with only a financial goal in mind. I call that ‘having dollar signs in your eyes.’ Stop limiting yourself. Improve the quality of your life. When you improve the quality of your life, you improve all aspects of your life.

It’s like that law of attraction. Millions of people have now heard of The Secret, a theory which brings phrases like positive thinking and the law of attraction to everyday conversations. How Do You Use the Meeting?

The following comments are my observations about the meeting. This meeting is much like the meetings you attend. So, think about the meetings you attend. As I attend this specific meeting, I have found it to be a safe environment for its members to try new marketing tactics for their businesses. Sure, currently the marketing tactics include social media and email blasts; you have a real touch for creating a fantastic postcard and flyer. Now, the meeting introduces you to another tactic – speaking about your business. This basic marketing tactic includes creating and saying your elevator speech. The 30-second business introduction at each meeting gives you the chance to test your words in front of real people.

  • Do you listen to the words the other women use to introduce their businesses?
  • How do they speak?
  • What do they do with their hands?
  • What are the reactions from the other women?
  • Don’t you just love some of the catchy last lines?

Does the meeting allow you to have a vendor table? Have you had a vendor table yet? This is your training ground if you want to move your business into a larger vendor venue or an industry trade show. You learn and practice setting up a table that displays what you sell. What works? Finally, at this meeting, the board goes beyond marketing our businesses. They emphasize one-on-one meet ups between members. These are not just business marketing tactics. Do you know why? These are to learn about the person behind the business.
